The Last of Us Part II Could Be “The End of the Story”

The The Last of Us saga will continue with the premiere of Season 2 of the TV series. On August 07, 2025, we will witness the events of The Last of Us Part II in live-action, with an eagerly awaited continuation on Max.

But will we get a new game in the franchise? At this point, it’s still uncertain. In fact, Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, makes us think it might not happen after all.

It has been almost five years since the release ofThe Last of Us Part IIon PS4. Along the way, the original game has debuted on PC (and PS5), and additional content such as the No Return mode in The Last of Us Part II Remastered has been released.

Naughty Dog decided to cancel The Last of Us Online in December 2023 after meeting with Bungie to assess the viability of the online multiplayer game. It’s a shame, as Shuhei Yoshida stated that it was “great.”

Now, the Californian PlayStation studio is focusing its efforts on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and a The Last of Us Part III doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

Neil Druckmann’s Surprising Statement

Neil Druckmann confirmed this in an interview with Variety. He feared being asked about a new entry in the saga, and his answer will leave some fans in shock.

Many dream of a hypotheticalThe Last of Us Part III,whether on the PS5 generation or perhaps on the next, when PlayStation 6 hits the shelves. However, we may never see another sequel to Naughty Dog’s franchise.

Druckmann himself admits that he’s not particularly skilled at planning sequels—except forThe Last of Us Part II,which was conceived after developing the original 2013 game.

He urges fans not to “bet” on a third game, which sounds more like a farewell than a dismissal of rumors and speculation.

“I was expecting this question. I guess the only thing I’ll say is: don’t bet on there being more The Last of Us. This could be the end.”

It’s possible that Druckmann is saying this to divert fans' attention and build excitement for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. But it could also mark the definitive end of the saga featuring Joel, Ellie, Abby, and others.

At least we’ll always have Naughty Dog’s clever Easter eggs hinting at future projects, just as The Last of Us: Left Behind did for Intergalactic. Who knows—perhaps Jordan A. Mun’s adventure will include a nod to a third The Last of Us title.

For now, until further notice,The Last of Us Part II RemasteredforPCwill be the last release in Naughty Dog’s saga. It will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store starting June 06, 2025.
