With the release of theHeroes of SkyrimforThe Elder Scrolls Legendscoming later this week, June 29th, the expansion brings with it over 150 new cards for the free to play strategy card game. The new cards introduce some new features and gameplay mechanics to the game and we have a closer look at some of the highlights.

The Elder Scrolls Legends: Heroes of Skyrim New Features

The following are some of the highlights of the expansion

Dragons and Lookouts

Skryim, as we all know, is a land ofdragonsand in the expansion, they represent a variety of attributes, rarities and abilities. Here are a few of the ones coming:

The expansion addsLookouts, who represent beings that predicted the return of dragons. When you summon one of the dragons during a match, their predictions are “fulfilled” and they confer a benefit, such as a boost to health or a free summon. The Lookouts are found across all 5 of the attributes (colors) so you can build a dragon deck around your favorite color.

TheShoutswere a signature feature of Skyrim, that allowed the dragonborn player character to harness powerful words of power to be used against their foes, including dragons. In Heroes of Skyrim, the Shout has been made into a gameplay keyword mechanic. There are 5 Shouts, 1 for each color, and they get stronger with every use. At the start of every match, the Shouts are at level 1, and after you play a Shout all of your copies upgrade to the next level, up to level 3. As a Shout levels up, it’s magicka cost stays the same but its effects get more powerful.

In the example above a level 1 Shout summons 1 ally, and eventually, upon reaching level 3, that same Shout will instead fill an entire lane with these allies. As a result stacking up on these will be a neat way to build up a deck that gets gradually stronger.

Some cards will support this mechanic by making your Shouts stronger without playing one, and others will make it easier to get to the Shouts in your deck.

Companion Beast Form

Another new gameplay keyword mechanic isBeast Formwhich appears onCompanions. Whenever you break an enemy rune, any Companions with the Beast Form keyword will transform into a Werewolf. This transformation comes with a growth in size, increasing their attack and defense stats, which makes these cards great for an aggressive deck that puts the heat on and tries to cancel out the momentum shift of rune breaking.

In addition to the new features mentioned above, the expansion features a whole slew of new regular cards that fit right into the flavor of the land of Skyrim, especially ones within the Nord theme of cards.

The Heroes of Skyrim is releasing for The Elder Scrolls Legends on Thursday, June 29th for PC and tablets, so you’ve got a few days to theorycraft some new decks. If you haven’t given the game shot, it’s free to play, so there’s no risk to try it out if you’re into games like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone. It’s also coming to iOS and Android this year so if you’re always on the go and stuck in lines, it will be a great way to escape to Tamriel while you’re waiting to buy milk.
