This sequel marks Arnold’s return to the franchise after the much-malignedTerminator Salvation, which was in production during the actor’s stint as Governor of California. He returns as the iconic T-800 inTerminator Genisys, but with a unique twist: he has actually served as Sarah Connor’s (Emilia Clarke) “guardian” for several years, as unexpected events have altered the past and threaten the future for all mankind. In the war of man against machine, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back to 1984 by resistance leader John Connor (Jason Clarke) to protect his young mother, Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). Now Reese must join forces with Sarah and her “Guardian” (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to save the world and stop the next evolution of Terminators.

There had beenrumorsthat the sequels were canceled entirely, since the film underperformed at the domestic box office, taking in just $89.7 million. However, the action-thriller has gone on to become a big hit internationally, with a worldwide total of $440.1 million, and Skydance’s Dana Goldberg confirmed earlier this month that thesequelsare still happening, although adjustments will be made.
