Taika Waititihas previously revealed thatThor: Love and Thunderproduced a lot of unused footage. By a lot, he meant around two hours worth when all is said and done, and that included scenes filmed with former Marvel stars Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage, along with Lena Headey. However, fans shouldn’t get too excited about seeing any of those guest stars appearing in a deleted scenes collection on the Blu-ray or DVD release, as Waititi doesn’t plan on anyone ever seeing them.
AsThor: Love and Thunderdoes the business at the box office, fans are already wanting to see some of the scenes that didn’t make it into the final cut. According to Natalie Portman, this included several worlds and other gods that just were too much for the already bustling storyline, and Waititi confirmed this in a recent interview withInsider. When asked whether he was disappointed at the amount of footage that ended up not being used, the director said:
“I wrote the thing so when you cut anything it’s a little bit of a challenge to yourself because you’re like, “Am I not that good? Should I have seen this coming?” But every film I’ve done I’ve probably cut the same amount out. When you go into the edit you just never know. A scene on its own could be the most funniest thing or intriguing thing, but sometimes those things if you keep them in will just make the movie screech to a halt. So you have to do what’s best for the film. And if you ask any of those actors who were cut out — Jeff Goldblum, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage — they all understand how it works. They have been in the game long enough. But that’s just the way I look at things. People say, “I can’t wait for the deleted scenes with those actors.” I don’t want people to see the deleted scenes because they’re deleted for a reason: They aren’t good enough.”

While the reviews forThor: Love and Thunderhave been anything other than resoundingly positive, the weekend box office has shown that the pull of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is above the opinions of critics.The film took $143 million domestically, making it the third-highest domestic opening of the year, but adding in its international haul, the worldwide gross for the weekend tipped just over the $300 million mark.
While it seems that Marvel’s billion-dollar bandwagon was almost a sure thing followingSpider-Man: No Way Home’s tremendous response,Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessfell just short of the magic number, and all eyes are now onThor: Love and Thunderto try and be the first Marvel movie of the year to join the billion-dollar club.
Of course, there are several other factors currently impacting moviegoers, from pandemic ramifications to many countries seeing the cost of living soaring, meaning that cinematic treats are not always an option at the moment. However, there is no way thatThor: Love and Thunderis going to be any kind of flop, and while it has quite a hill to climb to beatThor: Ragnarok, it could easily become the second highest-grossing Thor movie in the MCU.
