Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyhas been a big success at the box office for Disney and Lucasfilm, which is probably very good news forStar Warsfans. The movie did a few risky things, but perhaps most importantly, it was the first time a character from an animatedStar Warsseries was brought into live-action in the form of Saw Gerrera. The character first showed up inStar Wars: The Clone Warsbut now, he will be showing up on Disney XD’sStar Wars Rebels. To hype up the event, a new trailer for the upcoming two-partStar Wars Rebelsepisode has been released online.
Disney XDdropped the trailer on their YouTube channel recently, and it primarily focused on the return of Saw Gerrera to theanimated Star Wars universe. The two-part special, titled “Ghosts of Geonosis,” is going to haveForest Whitakerreprising his role as Saw Gerrera fromRogue One: A Star Wars Storyand these two episodes will be heavily focused on him, as evidenced by this trailer. The trailer itself features a good amount ofStar Wars: Rogue Onefootage interweaved with footage from the upcomingStar Wars Rebelsspecial to provide some context, and it is pretty effective.
The events inStar Wars Rebelstake place a few years prior to theevents depictedinRogue One: A Star Wars Story, so Saw Gerrera appears to be a bit more put together in these episodes of the series than he was in the latestStar Warsmovie. That said, he still looks to be his extremist, anti-hero self, just with a little bit more mental stability. It looks like the crew of the Ghost ship are going to have to go on a mission to save Saw Gerrera, which is interesting since the Rebellion and Saw are at odds with one another inRogue One. Perhaps we will get to see where the divide occurs.
For those who may not know, the character of Saw Gerrera was created by George Lucas. He first appeared in a four-part run of episodes onStar Wars: The Clone Warsduring the fifth season. The arc featured Saw and his sister Steela fighting with Ondarian Rebels against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. They were aided by Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ahsoka Tano, but the end of the arc wasvery tragicfor Saw.Spoilersif you haven’t watchedStar Wars: The Clone Wars, but his sister Steela died and that sort of pushed Saw into his extremist ways.
Star Wars Rebelsis becoming an increasingly more important part of the newStar Warscanon, so much so that there were a ton of references to the show inRogue One: A Star Wars Story. Bringing Saw Gerrera into the fold duringStar Wars Rebels Season 3will only help cement the show as essential viewing forStar Warsfans. “Ghosts of Geonosis” is set to air on Disney XD on Saturday, January 7.
