Marvel head Kevin Feige has opened up a little bit about his newStar Warsmovie. This remains one of the most interesting projects on Lucasfilm’s development slate, at a time when the future of the franchise (at least on the movie side of things) remains very uncertain. But Feige, the chief architect behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and noted fan of a galaxy far, far away, recently signed on to produce an entry in the franchise. Now, he’s revealed some very basic information about the tale he’s going to try and tell.
During a recent podcast appearance,Kevin Feige, who was recently promoted to Chief Creative Officer at Marvel, was asked about his mysteriousStar Warsmovie. At this point, virtually nothing is known about the project, only that the producer has a possible star in mind. While Feige couldn’t say much right now, he revealed that he hopes to explore new ground within the franchise. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“I love that world and I love thenotion of exploring new people and new placesin that universe. But that’s sort of all that can be said for now.”
This echoes the comments made byThe Last Jedidirector Rian Johnson who is developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies for Lucasfilm as well. Johnson previously said his proposed movies would move away from the legacy characters, such as Luke, Leia and even figures like Rey who we’ve come to know in the sequel trilogy. It’s a big galaxy out there with lots of stories to tell. It seems Kevin Feige hopes to explore the unknown as well.
Overall, the future ofStar Warson the big screen is extremely mysterious. Recently,Game of ThronescreatorsDavid Benioff and D.B. Weiss parted ways with Lucasfilm. The duo had been tapped to craft a new trilogy that was said to explore the origins of the Jedi Order. Unfortunately, creative differences got in the way. The status ofRian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogyalso remains a bit fuzzy, even though the filmmaker maintains that he’s still working on it. Plus, this December’sStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkeris set to conclude the main Skywalker saga, outside of just serving as an end to the current trilogy.
All the while, Lucasfilm will have a huge presence on Disney+, withThe Mandalorian, the first ever live-action series within the franchise, set to debut when the service launches. An Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor and aRogue Oneprequel starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor are also in the works, amongst several other yet-to-be-revealed shows. So, while the movies may be on uncertain ground to some degree,Star Warsisn’t going anywhere soon.
