Ironheartproducer Ryan Coogler teases that the Disney+ series will give fans a small taste ofwhat to expect from Doctor Doom inAvengers: Doomsday. WhenIronheartwas first announced back in 2021, nobody could have anticipated that it would be a story about science vs. magic, but that is what the Disney+ show has become. The series pits Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) against Parker Robbins / The Hood (Anthony Ramos), with the series trailer hinting that Ironheart will merge magic into her suit.
Speaking with Deadline at the premiere ofIronheart, Coogler discussed how the blending of magic and science inIronheartis very similar to what Doctor Doom is known for in Marvel Comics. Coogler acknowledged that they were working onIronheartlong before Marvel Studios decided to bring in Doctor Doom as the primary Avengers antagonist in the now-titledAvengers: Doomsday. However, he revealed that the show’s mix of magic and science is a small sample of what fans can expect inDoomsday, saying:

“We didn’t know it was going to be Doctor Doomand the Avengers when we first started, but he’s a guy in publishing who’s most famous for fusing technology and magic, so it’s a great sample of things that are to come in probably what’s going to be the biggest movie in Marvel history.”
Marvel Fans' 6 Most Convincing Theories About RDJ’s Doctor Doom
Robert Downey Jr. shocked fans everywhere when he revealed that he’d be coming back to the MCU – not as Iron Man, but as Dr. Doom.
Doctor Doom was announced as being the planned villain forAvengers: DoomsdayandSecret Warsin July 2024, whileIronhearthad been in development since 2020, with filming taking place in 2022. However, Marvel reportedly had begun considering a pivot from Kang the Conqeuror to Doctor Doom as far back as mid-2023 following the disappointing performance ofAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaand actor Jonathan Majors' arrest for domestic assault. Even thoughIronhearthad finished filming, reshoots took place in 2024 shortly before Robert Downey Jr. was announced as playing Doctor Doom, so Marvel Studios by that point might have known the direction they were going in.

Doctor Doom, Master of Science and Magic
Very little about Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom is known, which has led to wild speculation. Some have reported thatDoctor Doom will be a Tony Stark variant, despite the Russo Brothers clearly stating that this Doctor is, in fact, Victor Von Doom. It is expected that Doctor Doom will be from the same reality as Marvel’s First Family in their upcoming movie,Fantastic Four: First Steps, but even that is only a theory now.
In the comics, Doctor Doom is both one of the greatest sorcerers and scientists. The prospect of seeing that dynamic on film is exciting and presents him as a threat that no single hero is prepared to handle. Marvel Studios will likely play up the character’s magical abilities. They are currently running a comic series event titledOne World Under Doom, which sees the villain become the Sorcerer Supreme and take over the world. Marvel clearly wants fans to associate Doctor Doom with a magic user, which will have major ramifications for the multiverse. Hopefully, that means a future forDominique Thorne’s Riri Williams, since Ironheart will be one of the few heroes prepared to take on Doctor Doom.
