The first of many longer, more involved quests inTainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Dead as Dreams has the player going through the crypts and graveyards to find a disturbance. There’s nothing like disturbing the dead in this classic mission type, as we’re faced with the potential of a necromancer. There are quite a few side missions, such as Dead as Dreams, but this will no doubt be the first you will encounter in your adventures.

Sometimes traders traveling across Avalon are picked up by bandits, and sometimes it’s your job to get the goods back.

Completing this mission will unlock theGathering Ethereal Cobwebsside quest.

When you arrive on the shores of the Horns, your first mission is to head to the small Keep to the west (Horns of the South). This is the main hub city of the first act, but that’s not the only place where you’re able to find quests. For Dead as Dreams, you will have to head outside the safety of the city walls and track down Margh.

Margh is located to the north of the city at the first intersection. Be sure not to accidentally go down the slope into the beach area, but instead follow the road until you reach a small hut where Margh is skinning and preparing a deer.

Talking to him, he will reveal he has a mission for someone like you, provided you don’t mind the smell of the undead. It would seem the local cemetery has an alarming number of undead monsters popping up recently, and he wants you to investigate. He suggests that it could very well be a necromancer pulling the strings.

Heading to the Cemetery

The cemetery isn’t too far off from Margh. All you have to do is head directly north, and you’ll come across it. Here, you will need to sneak around or take each skeleton or mangy mutt one by one, otherwise things can overwhelm you quickly.

After dealing with some of the undead, head down into the crypt itself, where you will meet Huardoc, the keeper of the crypt and seemingly a ghoul. It would seem Huardoc knows exactly what’s going on and that you need to talk to his master. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get to him for free. Instead, you may either pay him5 Wealth or pass the Perception check. Afterward, he will give you the key to the door nearby.

There’s a lot to explore in the crypt, but there are enemies roaming around. Most of them are fairly harmless, specifically zombies, skeletons and flamegobblers, but there’s also a new enemy: Lost Knights. If you look at the walls, you will notice these large stone knights, but the vast majority are just that: decoration. There are a handful, though, that can come alive if you take their path and pursue you. They are immensely slow and will give up on the chase fairly quickly.

After navigating the crypt, you’ll eventually come across Yorath, the necromancer and Huardoc’s master. Talking to him, you can immediately initiate combat, and slaying him will allow you to leave and return to Margh. If you want to pursue the quest a little further and make things easier, you’ll need to complete the Spirituality or Practicality check:

This comes after Yorath tells you to ask Huardoc about the undead to gain more knowledge about it. If you’re able to successfully navigate these checks, Yorath will become an undead himself, experimenting on himself. You could leave and return to Margh, but we recommend killing Yorath. He’s a husk of his former self, and doesn’t pose any threat. Also, he drops some very good gear.

Regardless, head back to Margh to tell him about the Necromancer, where you can return to the Keep and let Fearghas know the job has been done.
