Led by the game’s creative director, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Hell Is Us delves into the protagonist’s role as an investigator—another crucial aspect of the gameplay.
Jova is the hometown of Rémi, the hero ofHell Is Us.There are no directional markers to guide players there, only contextual clues and NPCs to interrogate. Additionally, the game features no map or compass.
Finding the way to Jova will depend entirely on the player’s ability to gather information. For example, Rémi questions Rebecca, a young woman, about the town’s blacksmith, obtaining a new lead.
Rebecca tells Rémi that the person he is looking for left with the Peacekeepers in white trucks. This information unlocks a side quest in the form of an investigation.
Finding the Way Without a Map
Clues will be just as important to Rémi as his arsenal. He takes note of everything he discovers, and by piecing together the information, he will find his next objective.
It’s highly beneficial to complete these optional challenges. While not mandatory, they provide Rémi with resources, rewards, and items that will aid him in his journey.
The gameplay trailer ends with an unusual request: a villager asks Rémi to find powdered milk for her baby.
The sections set in Jova are just one of many areas filled with side challenges in Hell Is Us, expanding the gameplay experience—especially for completionist players.
Jacques-Belletête assures that there are “countless mysteries” to uncover in the game beyond the main story. However, these won’t be impossible puzzles, as the director promises that all will have clear and intuitive solutions.
A Director with a Strong Legacy
The pedigree of Hell Is Us’s director is another guarantee of how compelling this title will be. Jacques-Belletête previously led two masterpieces: Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided.
Players will have to wait until September 4 to see the full extent of the game’s originality. Additionally, a Deluxe Edition—already available for pre-order—will include cosmetics, the soundtrack, a digital art book, and an extra investigation.
