The Lyre of Ire (also known of ShinyHarp or Silver Harp in previous versions of Dragon Quest III) is a nonessential item inDragon Quest III HD-2D Remakebut can be a fun item to get nonetheless. In a different Dragon Quest game, it is an essential item, but here it has a function that can help with level grinding but is more of an Easter egg in reference to that other Dragon Quest game.

Review: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake

Is HD-2D the key to revitalize Dragon Quest III or should it have stayed in the past?

The Lyre’s Function

When the Lyre of Ire is played on the world map, it will instantly summon some monsters to battle. This is a useful feature for level grinding, as the player no longer has to walk aimlessly looking for a fight, but thanks to the introduction of the Monster Wrangler, it is an unnecessary item. The Lyre of Ire is functionally the same as the Monster Wrangler’s Whistle ability, but many players will still want to seek it out for the sake of completing everything.

Cantlin’s Clue

The Lyre of Ire belongs to Galen, who, like the hero, is out on his own adventure. Galen can be found in Cantlin, and when the player talks to him, Galen mentions that he left the Lyre of Ire back at his house. Talking to Galen isn’t necessary to trigger any event to make the Lyre of Ire available, but it does help fill the story as to why the hero is taking the Lyre of Ire from his house. During our review playthrough, the Lyre of Ire was already in our possession when we stumbled across Galen.

Galen’s House

Northwest of Talontear Tunnel is a small house, which should hold some significance for players who are very familiar with the early Dragon Quest games. There are people in the house, but since this is an old-fashioned RPG, they think nothing of a party of heavily armed adventurers entering their home and rummaging through their belongings. On the left side of the house there is a door that leads outside. Go through this door and the party will be on the side of Galen’s House. There are some cellar stairs to the side of the house. Go down the stairs and help yourself to whatever Galen has stashed away in his Cellar.

The large sparkly thing is the Lyre of Ire. Take it, play it to summon monsters to battle, pretend it isn’t redundant if anyone in the party is or ever was a Monster Wrangler that learned to whistle, and take pride in owning such a fine stolen instrument.
