The base game ofDragon Quest III HD-2D Remakeis on the shorter side compared to some other modern RPGs, but the post-game content offers some difficult challenges for those who aren’t ready to call it a day after vanquishing the Lord of the Underworld.
The Castle of the Dragon Queen is a good place to go for players looking for an even greater challenge, and for those that are really gluttons for punishment, they can find even greater challenges in the Temple of Trials. However, the Temple of Trials cannot be found anywhere on the map. Its location can only be revealed by granting a wish.

Is HD-2D the key to revitalize Dragon Quest III or should it have stayed in the past?
After the credits roll and the player resumes playing with their newly earned title, they return to the Castle of the Dragon Queen. There is a portal that can take true heroes to Heaven, get into that portal and get ready to slog through many large dungeons that have been previously explored, with new and more powerful enemies and some hidden treasure on the way. Making their way through ??? is not a challenge that should be taken lightly.
Not only is the path a very long one, covering many sections the player has previously traveled, including the Pyramid, Faerie Cave and Maw of the Necrogrond, but random encounters can instantly end the player’s journey. Many of the enemies here can take two actions per turn, cast Twack, put the party to sleep or breathe paralyzing gas. They also have high hit points, defense and agility. Powerful abilities or weapons that can be used as items are essential as spell casting can be blocked. Once the player has made it through all the dungeons, they will end up in Cloudsgate Citadel. This is a nice place to save their progress, stock up on items, and then move on to climbing Citadel Tower.
Citadel Tower isn’t as long as the dungeons in ???, but it is crawling with many random encounters that could just as easily end the player’s adventure. Once they reach the top, they will be greeted by the dragon Xenlon. Xenlon is going to be the toughest battle the hero has faced so far. If the player can defeat Xenlon without taking too many turns, Xenlon will grant the hero a wish. The first wish requires victory in under 35 turns, but repeated battles to get all the wishes will need to be done quicker.
There are a few tempting options, but in order to unlock the Temple of Trials, the player will need to move the cursor to the bottom, where a blank space sits below the wishes. Selecting this will surprise Xenlon as he doesn’t expect you to know about this. The blank space is for a super secret prize, but after the shock of the player requesting such a thing, Xenlon will honor the agreement and the wish will be granted, unlocking the Temple of Trials.
Temple of Trials
Now that the wish has been granted, and the party is back in the Castle of the Dragon Queen, it’s time to zoom back to Aliahan and hop onto Ramia. Fly north until an anomaly is discovered in the sky, something that looks like a portal to another world. Fly into that and the player will be in the Temple of Trials.
The Temple of Trials is full of the most powerful monsters the hero has seen so far. The challenge not only lies in the difficulty of the monsters, but the conditions that must be met to succeed. The central door is sealed for now, but there are five portals with different tasks. The southwest portal takes the player to a spirit that demands specific items, usually four of something or 25 of something. Bringing the items to this spirit satisfies that demand, but then they want more. The northwest portal requires the party members to be equipped with boomerangs or claws.
Any other weapon type will make them useless in battle, barely dealing any damage and receiving over 1000 points of damage when hit. The northeast portal is a similar set-up, but axes and staves are the required weapons. The southeast corner requires the player to show the spirit rare items, such as the Sword of Kings, an Auroral Helmet, and a whip that requires many mini-medals. The south portal requires rescuing many friendly monsters. We don’t know the exact requirement of rescued monsters, but the spirit lit the torch when we had 116 monsters. The weapons challenges will likely require a trip to Alltrades Abbey in order to change the class set up, so everyone can participate in the trial.
