Oscar-nominated screenwriterMeg LeFauveis about to make the jump to directing. After writing the Academy Award-winning Pixar movieInside Out, Disney has tapped her to co-direct the upcomingDisney AnimationmovieGigantic. She will be directing the movie alongsideTangled’sNathan Greno.
The Hollywood Reporterbroke the news thatMeg LeFauvewould be making her directorial debut onGigantic. The movie is said to be an updated take on the tale ofJack and the Beanstalk, a story that has been told quite a few times over the years. The big twist will be that Jack winds up befriending a female giant, instead of just cutting down the beanstalk and killing the giant for the golden goose. Here is the synopsis for the movie.
“Set in Spain during theAge of Exploration, Gigantic follows a teenage adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds, along the way he meet Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 10 year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality-and who knew giants were so down to earth?”
The project was first announced duringDisney’s D23event last year after spending some time quietly in development behind the scenes.Meg LeFauvewas reportedly brought in to do some consulting on the script forGiganticand that ultimately led to her taking on a bigger role in the production. DirectorNathan Grenohas some lofty expectations for the movie, but given Disney’s recent track record, it probably isn’t all that outlandish for him to have such high hopes. “We hope this will be the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk … with comedy and deep emotion.”
Nathan Grenoalso revealed thatGigantichas addedFrozensongwritersRobert LopezandKirsten Anderson-Lopez, who will be writing original songs for the movie. Not only didFrozenmake more than $1 billion worldwide, but the soundtrack went platinum multiple times, so having them doing music for the movie already helps give it a leg up in terms of potential success. Couple that with the addition ofMeg LeFauveand this could be the makings of another huge hit for Disney, who has been enjoying unprecedented levels of success at the box office in recent years.
