If you thought America’s love for police dramas likeNCISandCSIwas all about solving crimes, think again. It was about pushing this idea of cops as flawless heroes. Shows like these blurred the very line between fiction and reality, turning entertainment into what some might call PR for law enforcement, or well, copaganda.

In Donald Trump’s America, where “law and order” became a battle cry, this sort of messaging felt dangerous. Banning these shows might sound extreme, sure — but challenging the harmful stereotypes they reinforced? Now that’s a conversation America urgently needs to have.

Breaking the myth: How TV’s ‘copaganda’ sold us a flawed fantasy

In the wake of Black Lives Matter and the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Eric Garner, TV’s obsession with “copaganda”felt more relevant than ever. These cop-centric shows, which seemed harmless on the surface, actually worked overtime to shape public perception of law enforcement (and no, not in a good way).

Activist Aly Thee put it bluntly,

Copaganda serves to change popular opinion about the police and the entire judicial system … An example of this is the overwhelming number of television series that focus on law enforcement officers and their day-to-day life within the security forces. The big problem with these programs is that they do not recognize the deep flaws that exist within police activity.

The formula was simple: a good-vs-evil narrative where the cops were ALWAYS right and the villains inevitably faced justice. These series painted a picture-perfect version of law enforcement, glossing over the messy realities of systemic issues like poverty or institutional bias.

FromStarsky and HutchtoLaw & Order, TV made us comfortable with the idea of police as heroes. After 9/11, that trend only intensified, feeding into the national craving for security.

By 2020, shows likeNCISandCSIhad cranked out thousands of episodes, each doubling down on the same glossy myth of justice. But here’s the hard truth, folks: this feel-good fantasy wasn’t just innocent entertainment. It told us to trust a broken system, to cheer for institutions that have failed real people time and time again.

If America wants real change, just turning off the TV won’t help. We must smash the rose-colored glasses these shows handed us and demand better.

Justice isn’t tidy, and it sure as hell isn’t served by staying silent.
