The action scene of the 1980s was undoubtedly dominated by two stars:Arnold SchwarzeneggerandSylvester Stallone. They were big men with big muscles, and even bigger egos, which caused a lot of tension between the duo as they jockeyed for top spot at the box office time and time again. Their feud is now legendary, and one that Schwarzenegger says was “stupid,” as he recently revealed how the two icons were able to form a truce.

Speaking with Andy Cohen on his radio show,SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, Schwazengger recalled his long-running beef with Stallone, which included theTerminatorstar once manipulating theRockyactorto appear in one of the worst disasters of all time,Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Looking back on everything now, Schwarzenegger admitted that the two “hated each other” at the time, adding:

“We were kind of attacking each other and doing nasty things and saying nasty things about each other and all these stupid things.”

The Austrian bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-governor is still active in Hollywood today. Here’s a look his films during an iconic decade.

With such animosity between them, you’d think that it would be impossible for them to put aside their differences and egos for the greater good, but that’s just what happened. That is, if you consider the “greater good” to be a once-celebrated restaurant that drew huge dollars, and huge stars. “All of a sudden, I started working with Robert Earl and Keith Parish to create the Planet Hollywood franchise, those restaurants,” Schwarzenegger said. He continued:

“The next thing I know is I get a phone call from my lawyer, who was also Sly’s lawyer, he said, ‘Arnold, is there any kind of room for Sly in Planet Hollywood?’ That’s actually a good idea, because it could bring us together. And I wanted that. At that point I had grown out of my craziness. Sure enough, we made it work, and Bruce Willis became part of Planet Hollywood, Whoopi Goldberg became part of Planet Hollywood, Chuck Norris… It really was kind of an international cast.”

Fans Still Like to Ask: Who’s Better? Stallone or Schwarzenegger?

Sadly, Planet Hollywood is a shell of its former self these days, operating just three restaurants and four hotels. That’s a far cry from its once more than 60 locations it had around the world, but thankfully, Schwarzenegger and Stallone are still besties, and have been able to keep the past in the past.

That being said, the fans still like to make a big deal out of things, so while the two stars may have squashed their personal beef, many still like to compare their careers. Nowadays, Stallone is drawing high praise and critical acclaim for his Taylor Sheridan-created series,Tulsa King, while Schwarzeneggerhas been struggling to find approval with his Netflix show,FUBAR. Some might say that makes Stallone the clear winner, but in reality, they’ve both had memorable careers that have lasted decades, and neither shows any signs of slowing down soon.
